About Domestic Violence

Domestic abuse/violence affects each and every one of us either directly or indirectly. That one in four women will experience domestic abuse sometime in her life means the chances are great that we all know someone directly affected by domestic abuse. Too often the women are in a state of panic and/or confusion and do not know where to turn for help. They most often are not aware of the varied resources available to them or of the rights granted to them by the law.  The mission of The Well of Sychar is to provide these women and her children a safe and understanding place to recieve the help and counseling they need to develop healthy life styles and relationships devoid of abusive situations.

What is Domestic Abuse? It is defined by the State of Florida as any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member (as used in ss. 741.28 - 741.31)

As a working definition, Domestic Abuse is a pattern of deliberate, assaultive, and coercive behaviors used by one person in a relationship with the intent to establish and maintain power and control over another. It is a learned behavior, an intentional, decisive choice, a form of oppression, and it is wrong, illegal, unethical, and immoral.
